If you're looking to use 3D printing to help you make functional objets the limitation of some 3D printed materials can leave you a bit cold. If you're looking for waterproof, heatproof and food safe the obvious choice is ceramics — and you now have more choice than ever.
Sculpteo, a 3D printing service based just outside Paris, has unveiled eight glaze colours for its 3D printed ceramics. As is so often is the case, things can't just be 'blue' and 'red' anymore, so here's the full list of creatively monikered colours:
White Glossy; Oyster Blue; Tangerine Orange; Turquoise; Aquarius Blue; Satin Black; Anis Green; Lemon Yellow
Poor, lonely Turquoise.
The drawback with the ceramic printing and glazing processes is a lack of fine surface details as well as a releatively large minimum feature size. If, however you're looking to make something like a the mugs that Sculpteo uses as an example, you shouldn't have any problems.
Major pottery companies such as Denby are already using 3D printing when they're developing new lines, and no so can you! Research being undertaken at the University of the West of England, in collaboration with other organisations is looking to drive forward ceramic 3D printing, so fingers crossed for more developments soon.
