World's first smartphone skirt
When you think of 3D printing’s hype bedfellow wearable tech you think of heart monitors in your jogging vest, smart watches wrapped around you wrist or a thermometer in your babygrow.
This piece by Nokia, Kin and designer duo Fyodor Golan takes the meaning of wearable tech to a whole new level.
This dress made of smartphones on the runway at London Fashion Week caused quite the stir but while the application, which makes the dress look like flowing material, looks great, it is 3D printing that is holding the skirt together.
The screen of each Nokia Lumia on the skirt each act like a fluid portion of fabric, it was essential for them to be held in place with minimal vision of the wireframe underneath or the clasps.
Those clips were each 3D printed on a MakerBot Replicator, and designed to the exact scale and orientation required to make the dress resemble its fabric counterpart.
This is another example of how 3D printing is being used as another tool in a designer’s locker and another example of how Nokia are embracing the technology faster than any other smartphone manufacturer.
