The MakerBot Christmas Challenge
In what seems like some companion news to our 10 3D Printed Christmas Decorations article MakerBot have announced the Thingiverse Holiday Ornament Challenge in partnership with award winning radio show Studio 360.
Simply by designing a 3D printable Christmas decoration and uploading it to Thingiverse with the tag #MakerBotOrnaments you could be in with the chance of being whisked to NYC to join Bre Pettis and radio show host Kurt Anderson as a special guest at Science Fair: Studio 360 in 3D, at The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space at WNYC in SoHo! There are also ten runners up prizes.
Thingiverse already has over 900 Christmas ornaments and with the advent of this competition that number is set to soar. The site now hosts well over 100,000 designs and is growing at a rate of knots.
"We are very excited to see what our Thingiverse community and the national Studio 360 audience come up with for the holidays," said Bre Pettis, CEO of MakerBot. "Ornaments are always fun to create and often have special meaning to individuals and families, so it will be awesome to create some favourite holiday ornaments or design new ones that can be shared on Thingiverse and 3D printed to give to family and friends."
Radio show host and cultural critic Kurt Anderson was also pretty excited by the prospect of 3D printed Christmas ornaments., "As a kid who watched The Jetsons and Star Trek, how could I not be dazzled and fascinated by cutting-edge technology?" says the Studio 360 host . "As 3D printing becomes everyday reality, I'm eager for our audience to take the technology on a test drive. (Also, I like Christmas tree ornaments.)"
