Furniture design and 3D printing go hand in hand, the ability to create complex designs that would be impossible to manufacture by hand opens up limitless possibilities to design houses. It comes as no surprise to see one of the world’s leading furniture design companies, Tom Dixon, take the 3D printing bull by the horns at the Milan Furniture Fair this week.
The British furniture and lighting company, launched in 2002, has been at the forefront of 3D printing technology in the furnishing fields for some time now. At the same event last year, MOST 2012, Tom Dixon received huge plaudits for their Digital Forming Co-Design Bar, which allowed the public to build upon Tom Dixon’s acclaimed lighting designs to create a bespoke 3D model.
This time out Tom Dixon have joined forces with Sculpteo and Dassault Systems to launch an open design contest. The project, which runs throughout this week, hopes to encourage designers from across the globe to contribute designs that would be ideal for 3D printing. The winner will have their furniture printed by Stratasys and featured in the Maison & Objet trade show in Paris.
Sculpteo will also by at the event, based at the National Museum of Science and Technology, with a Mojo 3D printer demonstrating the professional quality, rapid prototyping that can be achieved with desktop 3D Printing.
