Charles Caleb Colton once said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” if this is the case then 3Doodler will be blushing uncontrollably at the presence of The Ya Ya 3D Printing Pen.
Yes the world’s first 3D printing pen, 3Doodler, has been copied by a Chinese company. The Ya Ya (Crow Crow in English) 3D Printing pen, hasn’t even bothered changing the colour palette let alone the functionality.
The similarities in the product itself are mirrored in the similarities of its marketing strategy; not only are the promotional images pretty much facsimile versions of the 3Doodler images but the way they have gone about funding the project mirrors that of the 3Doodler.
The Ya Ya 3D Printing Pen has launched on a parallel universe version of Kickstarter called Demo Hour. Though there are many alternative crowd-funding websites I’ve not come across a more blatant rip-off than this, even the colour scheme is the same.
Although one could argue that this sort of hardware copying happens all the time and that there are some slight differences, it is clear from this fake pen’s Goodluckbuy (a Chinese retail site) page that they are marketing it is a 3Doodler, which we can assure you it is not.
We spoke to 3Doodler’s Communications Director, Daniel Cowen, about this copy version and far from being downbeat about the copy he was certifiably defiant, stating, “The one thing that nobody will be able to copy is our future innovations.”
A clear signal from 3Doodler that nothing will set them back not even a spot of flattery in the form of downright copying.
