Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc., is set to install an AMCM M 8K metal additive manufacturing (AM) system from EOS to support the development of hypersonic technologies.
The large-format, multi-laser powder bed fusion system will be installed at Kratos' Indiana Payload Integration Facility (IPIF) in Odon, Indiana, near the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division. The AMCM M 8K aims to address growing demand large 3D printed components inside affordable, high-cadence hypersonic systems.
“The capability we get from bringing the AMCM M 8K to the Indiana Payload Integration Facility will give us the flexibility, precision, and responsiveness to rapidly field the most advanced hypersonic systems,” said Mike Johns, senior vice president of Kratos SRE. “As we change the paradigm on low-cost, high-cadence hypersonic testing for programs like MACH-TB, this type of capability is critical to achieve the goal.”
EOS says the AMCM M 8K, which features a build volume of 800 x 800 x 1,200mm and eight high-power 1.2kW flexible beam shaping lasers, was developed specifically for space and defense applications. First introduced in 2023, the platform combines advanced thermal management, optimized process gas flow, sophisticated filtration systems, and in-process monitoring technologies to support the production of large, high-performance metal components with accuracy, consistency and quality.
